Jose, a first-generation Chicagoan with roots in Guadalajara, Mexico, brings a wealth of educational experience and a passion for student-centered learning to the Academy for Global Citizenship. Growing up in Chicago, Jose's exposure to diverse communities fostered his commitment to multicultural education. His journey began with teaching computer and photography skills to elementary students while still in high school, where his involvement in activism ignited a desire to empower young minds. After studying broadcast journalism and a stint teaching English in Guadalajara, he returned to Chicago and dedicated over 18 years to Chicago Public Schools. Jose's innovative spirit shone through his award-winning computer science program for kindergarten to fifth graders, culminating in his students winning the CPS coding challenge and being awarded the Innovative School of the Year award. Fueled by the belief that students thrive when invested in their learning, Jose's approach emphasizes creativity and personal choice, fostering a love for learning through technology, coding, web design, and exploration. His passion extends beyond the classroom, as he enjoys collaborating with parents and finds inspiration in his travels throughout Mexico. When not inspiring young minds, Jose can be found indulging in photography, video editing, coding, poetry, gardening, and spending quality time with his family and feline companions.
