Maritza is the Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Co-Director for Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at University of Chicago.
Maritza Gonzalez, MD, is currently an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago in the Section of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Gonzalez is also Co-Director of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at University of Chicago Medicine. Maritza, is the youngest of three children born to Mexican immigrant parents, she was born and raised on Chicago’s southwest side. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) as a member of the Honors College and majored in Neuroscience with a minor in Spanish. Maritza’s path after completing her Bachelors degree took her to a policy fellowship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). She then later returned home and completed her medical degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago Rockford Campus, College of Medicine.
Dr.Gonzalez’s commitment to her patients and passion for medicine inspired her to be an advocate for accessible health care. She finds it immensely rewarding to work with patients who are recovering from addiction and/or opioid use disorders as they navigate pregnancy. Dr. Gonzalez also enjoys working with and treating under-resourced patient populations that do not have or have limited access to quality health care. As part of her ongoing quest to improve pregnancy care and population health, Dr. Gonzalez is an avid researcher who investigates ways to better the management of high-risk patients. Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Perinatology and the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. In addition, throughout her career, she has mentored high school students, undergraduates, new medical students, and trainee physicians – helping them navigate admissions and academics.
